Grindstone to Mt. Rogers to Grayson Highlands

First Day

We will be hiking out of the Grindstone campgrounds early on Saturday morning. Let's see if we can make it to the top of Elk Ridge and we shoul have a nice vista to enjoy as we consume our feast. We will follow the Mount Roger Trail until we hit the AT at Deep Gap. Then we will take the AT east until we get to the Rhododeron Gap and we will stop for the day. It will be a fun little 7.2 mile walk in the woods. Oh yeah, we will have gone from 3600 feet to 5400 feet for an elevation gain of a mere 1800 feet - "that ain't nothing". The word is that it is a very nice camping area with a good water supply. The first day hike above is marked in red.

Second Day

If you want to hike some of the AT then day 2 is part of your dream. We will take the Pine Mountain Trail at the start of the day and what is cool about this is the old AT trail. We will run into the AT and make our way to Scales and then continue on our way around the AT until we run into the AT Spur Trail that will take us to Massie Gap and the Parking Lot. Waiting for us will be a delicious Beef Stew prepared by Mr. Robertson. The second day will be easier in difficulty but is a little longer and we have a deadline to be back in the parking lot to meet up with the rest of the Troop. Day 2 is marked in blue and clicking on the picture will enlarge it.
